For last 3 years we are raising our voice against global warming .This year also our focus
remains the same. In 2009 putting forward the state of Jharkhand our focus was on greenery.
In 2010 highlighting Karnataka we showed the importance of rain water harvesting .Our message was to “collect water “in 2011 setting of Kashmir we highlighted the evil effect of Deforestation. In an attempt to save mountains our slogan was “plant trees save life, this year we lay our focus on “sea pollution”.
We all know the ancient story of “Mahadev” drinking away poison which came out from ocean –bed in order to save mankind. That’s why we worship him in the name of “Nilkantha” but in today’s world City wastes and industrializations have polluted the seas and ocean of the world. The sea which is said to be the ancient source of life have been so gravely polluted that Scientists have pointed out no less than 400 places where there is no existence of any animal . These Places are termed as “Dead Sea “. Around 50% of rivers of the world are polluted and this polluted water is continuously flowing into the seas. Due to wind action pollutants like chemical fertilizer, oil, plastics, detergent, Mercury, Cadmium etc are mixing into the sea water .Scientist have calculated that every year 20 thousand ton mercury 64 lakhs ton wastes get mixed with sea water. Presently, as a result of this various aquatic species are endangered. The root cause of this disaster of nature’s greatest creation man. Pollution level is more where population density is high. 2/3 rd of world‘s total population live in the coastal areas. India has a 750 km coastline where 1/4 th Population of India dwell. In these coastal areas big cities like Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai have developed. Other than this we have 11 big, 16 Medium and 78 small ports. Unfortunately these cities are the main cause of sea pollution.
Along with other pollutants pesticides like DDT are also mixed with river water. Sea pollution is also affecting the food chain. Once it enters the food-chain it keeps on evolving with time. As a result slowly, we find extinction of one after another aquatic species. Hence the situation is alarming. So this year in our Puja we choose we choose to highlight this problem. As a theme State we selected Goa this year. Goa is unique in its scenic beauty with a far stretched coastline, but this beach is also danger .It faces danger both from nature as well as from man. Statistics reveal that 20 percent of the 105 km long Goa beach is at present is submerged under the Arabian Sea. Previously this cording Phenomenon was slow and negligible. But in last 50-60 years rate of erosion of the coastline has been alarming. Scientists blame both Global warning and reckless human activities for such disastrous effects. According to environmentalists the submergence of coastline is mainly due to global warming. Hence the horror of sea pollution is also witnessed in India. As a result we will have to be cautious and take immediate steps in order to control sea pollution or else it may result in to the extinction of the living world.
This year our Puja Pandal is built with various sea fishes and animals. We have tried to highlight the specialty of Portuguese architecture. The Pandal is around forty foot in height. In and around the Pandal various species of fish, crabs, Sea Horse, Octopus, etc sea animals would be seen. All these aquatic animals, affected by sea pollution are begging for life to Geddes Durga. Within the sea water, life of these troubled creatures will be shown. The sand stretches and sea-wave bubbles will also be seen. There will be signs movement of various small aquatic animals like snail etc. In order to symbolize the pathetic death of sea-animals an octopus is used. At the centre of the Pandal premise a shoal of fish is shown to highlight the result and dangers of sea pollution. In our Puja Pandal the evil-effects of sea pollution is shown with the help of sand craft. The main gate of the Pandal is built according to the Portuguese architecture. Boys and Girls dressed in Portuguese mythical character will stand at both sides of the gate and greet the Pandal hoppers. In addition to these there will be carnival masks and the whole premise will hold a festive mood, other than this there will also be handiwork specimens. There will also be famous ceramic and dotted painting of Goa. We have used coconuts, palm Leaves, palm Garland, coconut shells, cane, sea bubbles, snail, corn shells, corn and various other sea specimens in our Pandal formation. The joint efforts of the artists of Goa and Bengal have helped in the formation of the Puja Pandal. Along with this Goanese singers and dancer will uphold their culture in our Puja Pandal.
Keeping in mind the color variation in Goa idol of the goddess has been formed. The idol is 11 feet tall and 15 feet wide and the idol is decorated in Goanese jewelry.
The lights are provided as per requirement. In order to prevent the excessive electricity consumption, L.E.D lights are used. The festive mood will be restored with the use of different lights. Along with this some special effects are arranged in order to entertain people.
