It is a matter of pride for us that since its inception,
our club SURUCHI SANGHA w hich
was established in 1952, has kept up a glorious
tradition of promoting Sports, engaging in social work
and also a host of cultural activities.
It is a great achievement on our part that two of our
club members namely Sri. Sayashree Banerjee and Sri.
Krishna Tarafdar have represented India in Volleyball in
the 1982 ASIAD. In addition to Volleyball, at present we
have facilities to instruct Karate, and Yoga.
In the field of social work we have an enviable record
where we have done substantial work like helping victims
of Thalassaemia; providing financial support to the
hermaphrodites who are probably the most deprived
section of our society; to provide books for the poor
children, helping five poor girls every year to get them
married etc. In addition to this Blood and Eye donation
camps are organized on a regular basis. Our club also
maintains a hearse (dead body carrier) for the benefit
of the people of South Calcutta. For other details see

In the field of Cultural activities, Suruchi Sangha has
acquired fame not only in West Bengal but across the
whole country with its unique format of celebration of
Durga Puja. Over the years our club has come to acquire
the No.1 slot amongst the Puja organizers of Kolkata.
People have been found queuing up for hours to get a
glimpse of our Puja because they feel that unless you
have seen Suruchi’s Puja, your darshan of Pujas is
incomplete. As a part of our unique format of
celebration, every year we choose a particular state and
showcase its culture, its music, its dance forms, its
people and its arts. The Pujas have been inaugurated by
the Chief Ministers of the respective states or if he is
unavailable, by the Cultural or Tourism Ministers of
such states.
It is matter of irony that though our attention is
mainly focused on the sports and activities relating to
social work, Suruchi has acquired fame for its
celebration of Durga Puja which is a small part of our
activities. I take this opportunity to showcase through
this website the various activities undertaken by our
Club. It is our endeavor that Suruchi will emerge as a
name to reckon with in the sphere of social work, sports
and cultural activities.
