It was a devastation not
seen in recent memory. What started as a small trough of
depression in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, moved
rapidly towards coastal West Bengal, gathered guile and
made landfall near the Sagar Islands at around 2 pm on
Monday, 25.05.2009. At least 2 lakh people had been
rendered homeless in South 24-Parganas and the army had
been called out to reach inaccessible areas. When Aila
hit Kolkata, it snapped power lines, downed trees and
tore roof off buildings. Already with millions
unemployed and living on the streets of, Kolkata was hit
hard by Aila. There was an urgent need to provide relief
to the suffering millions. We at Suruchi Sangha decided
that we too will participate in relief work.
A door to door campaign was made to collect as much
relief material for our brethrens. I thank the people
who contributed from the society and our members who
participated in this work. Suruchi Sangha members follow
what Mahatma Gandhi taught that "consciously or
unconsciously, every one of us does some service or
other. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service
deliberately, our desire for service will grow stronger
and will make, not only our own happiness, but that of
the world at large.”
Our effort was to comfort the uncomfortable and to be a
friend for the friendless. If we could stop, reach down,
and pull others up, touch another’s life in an
extraordinary way we can put our social objective into
practice.
As social workers, it was our calling. As human beings,
it was our duty to stand by the effected people.
